A species rose from Japan.
The Rosa rugosa is often referred to as the Saltspray Rose due to its tolerance of dry sandy soils and salt spray winds. However, that isn't the best part about this rose, not even close. It's beauty and fragrance truly put the Pink Rugosa Rose over the top!
This rose is one of gardeners favorites to use as a hedge. It has beautiful petite pink flowers that have yellow central stamens. These flowers will continually bloom from June through August! It's definitely a stunner.
As the flowering season winds down, don't think this plant is done for the year! In August, the Rose Rugosa develops one inch red hips that can either be made into jams or left on the plant to provide food for wildlife during the winter months. Either way, these little, cherry tomato looking, fruits are gorgeous and create a lovely fall interest. They are packed with Vitamin C!
Rugosa Roses love to be planted in full sun or partial shade. They're incredibly tolerant of soil types that other plants typically don't find all that appealing. This includes sandy, clay, and salty soils. As if that wasn't impressive enough, this plant is also very drought tolerant and can survive, and flower, on short water rotations.
Landscapers and gardeners alike love this plant due to its adaptability and versatility. This is especially so in northern climates. Rugosa Roses aren't affected at all by the semi-regular application of salt on the roads.
